Leaves of Jazz is comprised of Jacynthe Bigras, vocalist and Beverley McKiver, pianist. From time to time they are joined by other performers. Their collaborative journey began after Beverley heard Jacynthe singing a jazz tune at a karaoke benefit. Since then they have enjoyed creating arrangements of old chansons and jazz standards with rarely-heard French lyrics. They performed at the No Borders Art Festival in May 2019 and for a full house at the Origins Arts and Community Centre in November 2019.
Jacynthe N. Bigras grew up in Vanier listening to community radio, developing her eclectic music tastes: punk, metal and hardcore on Friday nights, Jazz on Saturday afternoons as well as reggae and world folk. Vocalist, singer and longtime part of the Ottawa DIY music scene, she fronted her first band at 19.
Beverley McKiver is a pianist, composer and teacher who frequently collaborates with singers, choirs and instrumentalists. She has performed at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Native Earth Performing Arts in Toronto. Most recently, her “Odaabaanag” song cycle commissioned by Jumblies Theatre and Soundstreams in Toronto was performed at Toronto’s Harbourfront.
